Air transportation is a mode of transportation using aircraft helicopters and other aircraft to transport personnel, goods and mail. With the characteristics of speed and maneuverability, it is an important way for modern passenger transport, especially for long-distance passenger transport, which is indispensable for the transportation of valuable goods, fresh goods and precision instruments in international trade. Air transport has six characteristics: commodity, service, international, paramilitary, capital, technology, risk intensive and natural monopoly. Air transport can be divided into different types according to different standards. Air transport originated in 1871. Due to the international economic downturn in recent two years, the aviation transportation industry has encountered bottlenecks. But in the future, the air transport industry still has broad space for development. Air transport has the following characteristics: (1)Commercialization The aviation product is a special form of product - "spatial displacement", the product form is the displacement of air transport objects in space, the unit of product is "km" and "ton", the commodity attribute of air transport products is a by product purchase behavior in the air transport market with people finally realized. (2)Service Air transport industry belongs to the third industry and is a service industry. It reflects the number of services by providing "space displacement", and reflects the quality of the service by means of service and service. This attribute determines that the carrier must constantly expand the capacity to meet the increasing demand of products in the society and follow the principle of "passengers first, users first", so as to provide safe, convenient, comfortable and punctual quality services for the products users. (3)International Air transport has become the most important form of transportation in modern society, and has become the link of international political and economic cooperation. It includes both international friendly cooperation and international fierce competition, and is affected by international standard and international air transport market in terms of services, freight rates, technology coordination, operation and management, and the formulation and implementation of laws and regulations. (4)Paramilitary The aviation activities of human beings first entered the military field and then turned into civilian use. Air superiority in modern war is an important factor to achieve mastery of war initiative. So many countries in the law, air transport enterprises owned by cluster and related personnel in peacetime to serve the national economic construction, as a military reserve force, in time of war or a state of emergency, civil aviation will be in accordance with legal procedures by the state requisition, service in the military demand. (5)Capital, technology, risk - intensive Air transport industry is a high investment industry. Both the means of transportation and other transportation equipment are expensive and costly. Therefore, its operation cost is very high. Air transportation industry is highly risky due to its high technology requirements, complex operation of equipment and high degree of interdependence among departments. Any one government and organizations have no corresponding financial subsidies to the country, the air transport enterprises as the supplement of city public traffic. For this reason, the air transport industry is considered not a public welfare undertaking in the world, and we must take profit as the goal to maintain its normal operation and development. (6)Natural monopoly Due to the huge investment in air transportation industry, capital, technology and risk are highly concentrated, the investment recovery cycle is long, the main body qualification of air transport is restricted, the market access threshold is high, and the historical reason makes air transport industry form natural monopoly in the development process.
